Kanyakumari Tourist Places in Tamil Nadu India

  Kanyakumari has been named after the Goddess Kanyakumari Amman. Formerly named Cape Comorin today is Kanyakumari. It is the southern most tip of this peninsular Tamil Nadu, India. The place is surrounded by hills and valleys and three major seas. This district is a mixture of Tamil and kerala culture and custom. It has temples and chruches that edify humanitarianism in a circumfurance of 1672 sq. km.

We can see the sunrise and sunset here. It looks fascinating because it is in the tip of Indian peninsula and the confluence of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian ocean.

Kanya kumari has got the name by the Goddess Kanyakumari Amman. It is a legend that Goddess Parvathi in one of her incarnations as Devi Kanniya and came here. She did a penance on one of the rocks of this land’s end to obtain the hand of lord Shiva.

About Kanyakumari District General Information

         The capital of Kanyakumari is Nagercoil. The Kanyakumari town is geographically a cape, and it was known as Cape Comorin since ancient times Kanyakumari District has consisted of two geographical areas known as Nanjil Nadu and Idainadu.  The etymologists interpret the word Nanjilnadu as the country. There were several agricultural plantations of fields.  Nanjilnadu is mentioned in old Tamil literature. It is rich in agrarian area, where the town of Kottar as a major join influence in ancient times.

The place is well known for the temple of Nagaraja and the name of the city is been derived by this name.   It is an important pilgrim centre.

Prechiparai Dam (43 km)

        This is the southern most reservoir of the Tamilnadu state. Surrounded with densed trees and wild life this reservoir is a dwelling place for the hill tribals known as’ kanikars’ even today.

Thiruparappu water falls

         Thiruparappu water falls is about 13 km from pechiparai dam. The kodayar makes its descend at Thiruparappu and the water falls is an exquisite spot of visit. This falls is about 70Km from Thirunelveli. The word Thirparappu means a pavilion of beauty and sacredness.  The panaromic view of the shrine with green hills and the perennial river kodayur running in front of the shrine is really wonderful and attractive.  The sparkling water falls is a rich feast for our eyes.  A bath in these waterfalls gives most refreshment to our soul and body.


         Peer Mohammed durgha here is named after the great philosopher Mohammed Appa. The people of Kerala & Tamilnadu as a mixture genre live and celebrate without any difference of their caste, creed and religion.

Kumariamman Temple

The history of this temple is very romantic. It is dedicated to the virgin Goddess kanniyakumari. She is also called as Parvathi who stands to guard over the country. The temple is built at the spot where the Goddess is believed to have waited for her consort. Lord Shiva came here and claimed her hand in marriage.

The sage Parasurrama is said to have installed the diety. The shifting sands at the shores of kannyakumari were multihued. As a result, the colored rice was sprinkled by approving Gods over the couple at their wedding.

It is an enchanting story that, the diamond nose stud worn by the Goddess. It is believed to have led many a ship to be ship wrecked on the treacherous rocks near the shore. It was too bright to threat the reflection of the light.

The light from the nose stud was very unsuspecting to the ships. So the door on the side facing the sea had to be closed for ensuring the safety of the ocean liners.

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial

   Mahatma Gandhi   visited   Kanya kumari   in 1925 and 1937. This memorial to Gandhiji is raised at this spot in 1948.His ashes were kept for public dharsan and they have to pay their respects before immersing at the confluence of 3 seas.  A  beautiful  monuments  has been constructed after the commemoration of this event. The architecture of this memorial is such that the sun rays falls on this spot through a narrow orifice, where the ashes were kept.  This incident will take place on October 2nd only once a year [ie] Gandhiji’s Birthday. The valuable spot to visit in the memory of the father of the nation. The Gandhi Memorial is still maintained beautifully with the flavour unchanged from freedom struggle.

Thiruvalluvar Statue

        This is another important milestone to Kanyakumari district. The Thiruvalluvar Statue to the height of 133 feet indicates the 1330 couplets written by Thiruvalluvar. The statue is dedicated on the memory of such a valuable Wiseman of the state. This statue is constructed on one of the twin rocks in mid-sea.   Thiruvalluvar statue is fully made up of granite stones, weighing about 7,000 tonnes.  This statue comprises 3,681 pieces of granite boulders.  This weighs about 3-8 tonnes.

Thiruvalluvar statue is an embodiment essence of Tamil classic; ‘Thirukkural’.  In order to perpetuate the memory of Thiruvalluvar, the Tamil Nadu government has installed a statue of thiruvalluvar in kanya kumari at the confluence of three seas.

Kamarajar Manimandapam

        This is dedicated to late. Sri kamarajar the king maker of Tamil politics. He was a man of humble and affable nature with his love to the people of Tamilnadu. He is the man who made education possible to the villages of Tamilnadu. A freedom fighter and the former chief minister of the state and erstwhily president of Indian National congress is been remembered here.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial

         The Memorial consists of two main structures, the Vivekananda mandapam and shri pada Mandapam. This memorial is a sacred monument in rememberance of swamy vivekananda’s ‘Shripada parai’ He was a great mentor and an orator from India to the world. His great speech in chichago made him world-renowned and his thoughts are young and dynamic that to be followed by todays youngsters.

Swami Vivekananda was a great spiritual leader who belongs to the 19th century AD. He stunned the world in the parliament meeting in Chicago. Swamiji preached the religion of mind and the power of meditation.

Swami Vivekananda came down to Kanyakumari on December 24 during the year of 1892. He swam across the shark-infested sea and reached the rock. He sat in meditation on 26 and 27. And then he became a powerful spiritual leader.

This grand memorial to Swami Vivekananda is constructed on one of the twin rocks jutting out from the sea. It is about 200 meters from the sea shore. We can see a Dhyana Mandapam there. This Mandapam provides us an apt setting we can sit in a serene atmosphere and meditate. People from all over the world are visiting here. 

Sri Paada Mandapam is another shrine. It is constructed over the foot print of the Goddess, who is believed to done a penance here. Ferry services are available to reach this memorial during the time of 8.00Am-4.00Pm.

Government Museum

        A wonderful place to think about our ancestors. Beautiful carved stone sculptures of 7th centuryAD, Bronzes of 15th centuary AD, East Indian Company coins. Oldest musical instruments, arms, tribal used materials and lot more exciting exhibits that are exquisite here.

Suchindram Temple (12 km)

       Suchindram temple is about 13Km from Kanya kumari.  This temple is considered as one of the store houses of the richest specimens of art and sculptures in stone.  The temple is venerated by both Saivaites and Vaishnavaites.  It enshrines on a single Linngam, which is known as sthanumalaya.The trinity are installed in the form of a Linga which is having 16 moons[ie]Chandrakala. They are located one over the other under the canopy of the serpent Naga.  The gopuram of this temple is about 134 feet high.  There is a hollow trunk of a tree which was estimated to be over 2,500 years old.  The trunk has been plated  to preserve it from decay.  In that hollow tree there are 3 lingams.  They are Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara [ie] the trinity of the Indian scriptures.  We can see the image of Anasuya who turned them into babies is as its centre.  A small artistic shrine has been made in front of it.

The 18 foot-tall Hanuman and the musical pillars in the corridor are very interesting and worth to visit.  Located on the bank of the river pazhayar this temple is famous for sri sthanumalayan a from depicting Siva, Vishnu and Brahma in one form “The trinity” shrine in India.

Nagaraja Temple at Nagercoil

Nagerkovil is about 20km from Kanya kumari. There is a temple at Nagerkovil, which is dedicated to the serpent deity Nagaraja. The sanctum is a simple thatched shed, with mud walls. The prasadam distributed in this temple is in wet sand. It is scooped out from the ground where the image of the deity enshrines the king of serpents. The Naga flower found in the temple garden is a symbolic representation of Nagaraja.

Our tradition states that the king of Kalakkad was cured of his leprosy. Then he rebuilt the temple in Kerala style. Bhuthalavira Sri Vira udaya Marthanda varma ruled Venad with Kalakkad as his capital during the period of 1516-1535AD. It is believed that snake bite is not a fatal within a kilometer of the temple. The fane has some Jain sculptures also.

Chothavilai Beach (10 km)

        It is one of the best natural beaches in India, ‘an awesome place to relax with nature’.

Udayagiri fort

         One of the important fort those days. During the middle of 19th century. East India company’s troops were stationed in fort is an historical importance. At present a biodiversity park has been developed as of today.

Mathur Hanging Bridge

       It is the longest and tallest hanging bridge in Asia .The Bridge is made up of trough is significance to the Indian engineers.

St.xavier’s church

        St. Xavier church stands where an older church stood in the year of 1544.

Padmanabhapuram palace

        This is a historial place; it was once the capital of Travancore before 1601 AD (approx) the palace is situated in the centre of the padmanabhapuram fort. This palace is about 32Km from Kanyakumari.  There is a palace, inside this we can see an old fort and a pagoda shaped palace with 17th and 18th century arts and architecture. This fort spreads over an area of 6 acres. It is known for its famous antiques. This includes an armory of the royal family. The murals and the wood works in this palace is very intricate top visit and worth to see.

Apart from them, there are so many temples inside this fort. They are Sri Ramaswami temple, Sri subramanya temple and Sri Saraswathi temple. The scenes from Ramayana were carved out in wood in the Ramaswami temple. They are very fantastic.

Maruthuva Malai (11 km)

        A place of herbal medicinal stretches for more than a km reaching a height of 800 ft. at the highest point.

Muttom (16 km)

        This place is famous for its landscape and high rocks that gives a beautiful beach enjoyment and a natural scenario.

Sanguthurai (10 km)

        This is a beautiful beach resort of south India.

Vattakottai (Circular fort)

        This fort is built of granite situated 6 kms northeast to Kanya kumari cape, This is a terminal line of ramparts, today it is one of the picnic spot and near to vattakottai traces of a lighthouse is leepuram can be seen. Vattakottai is about 6Km from Kanyakumari.  This is a circular fort which gives overlooking to the sea. It was built by the Dutch in the 18th century.  The sea here is very calm and ideal  for bath.

Ulakkai Aruvi

       This is a natural waterfall situated in azhagiapandipuram.


      A natural dam constructed by a chitirai maharaja and now it is also a picnic spot to the vistors.

How to Reach in Kanyakumari

By air

Thiruvananthapuram airport is the nearest one.  It is about 87Km from here.

By rail

       Nagercoil and kanyakumari railway station is connected to all the rail routes of the country.

By road

       As the tip of the south, the roads, ends & begins to connect road travel thoughout the neighbouring towns and states of the country. Chennai is about 703 Km, Madurai is about 245Km from here, Rameswaram is about 409 Km, Thiruchendur is about 80Km from here.
